Description

Published in 1846 by French cultural pharmacologist Auguste Saint-Arroman, this volume provides an early analysis of the effects of caffeine on physical and mental health. The text also provides a moral argument about the ingestion of caffeine, as some view the substance as a drug. At the time of this volume, scientists had only recently (around 1820) isolated caffeine from coffee beans for study. Of the items covered in the work, coffee carries the most caffeine; a cup of brewed coffee has around 150 mg, while a cup of tea only has about 40 mg. Today, caffeine is considered the most popular drug in the world. It is estimated that around 90 percent of Americans consume it in some form every day.
